Richard Allen Wyer – born in Detroit, Michigan on 5/2/1934. He passed away on 1/30/2026 of natural causes. He was a beloved husband, brother, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
After graduating from Eastern Michigan University Richard became a history teacher in the Lorain City Schools from 1956 until his retirement in 1984. He took great joy in talking about history, with his real passion being the Civil War. He had quite the collection of history books. He also worked part-time for 22 years at Sears, and another 12 years with the Ohio Turnpike. (He earned retirement!) Once retired, he and his wife, Dolores, traveled together around the country and world, making many new friends along the way.
He proudly served as an officer in the U.S. Army.
He also loved sports, which included watching his grandkids play through high school and college or rooting on Michigan and Texas A&M football. But Detroit sports were his first love – especially the Red Wings and Tigers. His love for sports spilled over into his sports team hat collection which numbered over 500 at one point.
Richard is survived by his beloved wife of 69 years, Dolores, and his children, Scott, Chip (Jean), Robb (Karen) and Ann (Bill). Also, his grandchildren, Erin (Jason), Brian (Jesse), Audrey, Amy, Allison, Madison and Jamison; as well as his great grandchildren, Macie, Lila and Paisley. He is also survived by his brother, Alan (Gwen) and sister-in-law, Susan; along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial will be held on Sunday, February 15th at Wyers-Bollinger, (2900 N Ridge Rd, Elyria, Ohio, with visitation from 2:00 - 5:00 pm. A short memorial service to follow.
