Amherst Township - Elsie Pauline Newman (Cantu), 89, of Amherst Twp., went home to be with her Lord on Monday, April 28, 2025 at UH Elyria Medical Center surrounded by family, following a short illness.
Elsie was born on April 21, 1936 in Kimball, West Virginia and grew up in Welch, West Virginia. She graduated from Lorain High School in 1954, worked for Mr. J.C. Penney as his Girl Friday, taught drivers education at Higbees, worked as a custodian for Vermilion & Sheffield Lake’s Post Offices. She was the Owner and master upholsterer of L.C. Upholstery. There was not a craft that she could not accomplish, as she was a skilled seamstress. In 1977 and 1978 she created all the window treatments for the entire St. Joseph’s Hospital in Lorain. She also designed and sewed her two daughters’ wedding dresses. She loved Jesus, and her family was her top priority, as she prayed for them each day. As a loyal Sunday school teacher at her church, she loved sharing Jesus with children. She leaves behind a legacy in each person who came in contact with her, from her warm hugs, her welcoming smile, and her love for Jesus that shined through her. Her home was a place of gathering family and friends, and making memories over big family meals that she made from scratch. There are many that would describe her as a second mother figure in their life, especially the “Stang Road Family” as she constantly poured into them.
Elsie is survived by her children; Brenda Lea Teeters (Randy) of LaGrange, Ronnie E. Newman (Tammy) of Elyria, Nancy May (Matthew) of Sebring, FL, Kevin D. Newman of Elyria; Grandchildren, Meagan Shuttleworth (Tom), Hannah Rettger (Dan), Roslyn Nicoloff (Jeron), Caleb Teeters (Amanda), Luke Teeters (Allyson), Daniel Newman, Bradley Newman, Tiffany Searle, Tyler May (Allison) Dylan May; and 19 Great Grandchildren; sisters, Peggy Hunker of Oberlin, and Debra Click (Bobbie) of Lorain; several nieces and nephews.
